Injured Animal Assistance

General Notes:

If you are able to approach a wild animal, it probably needs assistance. Contact a wildlife rehabilitator to assess whether the animal needs to be rescued. You can locate a rehabilitator at: www.wildliferehabber.com

Never risk injury to yourself or others to assist an injured or sick animal.

Most mammals have teeth or claws that can hurt you if you don't know how to restrain the animal.    Additionally, many mammals carry parasites or diseases which can make you or your pets sick.    Call for assistance.

Some birds have sharp talons or beaks that can hurt  you if you don't know how to restrain the animal.  Call for assistance.

All injured animals require

• Quiet.  Loud noises or activity and handling can kill wild animals.  Please, if you have rescued an injured animal, put it in a box lined with soft cloth such as a t-shirt, secure the lid to prevent escapes, and place in a quiet place until it can be brought to a rehabilitator.  
• Do not put water in the box as the animal may drown or get chilled.
• Locate a wildlife rehabilitator as soon as possible.
• Please do not give animals milk. Most animals in trouble must be given specific rehydration fluids, and these cannot be administered unless the animal has been warmed. You will speed the process if you keep the animal safe and warm until it can be brought to a wildlife rehabilitator.
